Survive the Wild: How to Filter Dirty Water with Just a Piece of Paper

When you're outdoors and need water but only have access to very murky sources, what can you do if you don't have a water purifier? Here's a simple DIY method to create an emergency "filter" using just a roll of toilet paper.

Materials Needed:

  • Two containers (one for dirty water and one for filtered water)
  • A roll of toilet paper

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Containers: Fill one container with the dirty water.
  2. Create the Filter: Take a roll of toilet paper and roll it up tightly.
  3. Set Up the Siphon: Insert one end of the rolled-up toilet paper into the dirty water container.
  4. Start the Filtration: Place the other end of the toilet paper roll into the empty container. The siphon effect will cause the water to slowly travel through the paper, leaving some of the impurities behind.

This process is very slow, with water dripping out one drop at a time. It's helpful to set up a stable structure to hold the paper in place, allowing it to filter gradually over time.

Additional Steps:

  • Boil the Water: Once you have collected enough filtered water, it's best to boil it to kill any bacteria or pathogens that may still be present.

Better Alternatives:

While this method can work in a pinch, it's always best to be prepared with a lightweight water purifier when heading outdoors. Products like the LifeStraw or the upcoming Oassay high-flow, lightweight purifier can be excellent choices for ensuring safe drinking water.

By carrying a portable water filter, you can save time and ensure that your water is safe to drink, keeping you hydrated and healthy on your outdoor adventures.
